Today, September 3, marks the 30
th
anniversary of the start of production of the rst modern-generation Škoda Octavia. Since then, the model
has played a central role in the development of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker following its integration into the Volkswagen Group. Today,
the fourth generation of this best-selling model is produced in Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny and Kostanay, Kazakhstan. Almost 7.9 million units have
been produced over the past three decades. The decision to revive the historic Octavia name – originally used for a model produced between 1959
and 1971 – was taken during the development of a new vehicle. Work began in 1992, one year after Škoda Auto had joined the Volkswagen Group.
Access to the Group’s technology supported the development of a practical car styled by Dirk van Braeckel, then Škoda’s Head of Design.
The current, fourth-generation Octavia made its debut in November 2019 in liftback and Combi body styles and was updated in 2024. It has been
a favorite among customers for three decades thanks to its practicality, outstanding space, safety, and features at an exceptional value.
It all began with an idea from two Škoda
employees, Marek Jež and Jakub Krs (on the
right), to test how far the new seven-seater
Škoda Peaq could travel on a single charge.
To nd out, they set o on August 25 from
Mladá Boleslav to the Netherlands.
The series-production Škoda Peaq 90,
with a traction battery capacity of 91 kWh
(86 kWh net), an output of 210 kW, rear-
wheel drive, 19-inch wheels tted with
standard low-rolling-resistance tyres, managed
to travel 936 kilometers without recharging.
The record attempt was conducted under
the supervision of certication authority
TÜV SÜD. “The aim was to demonstrate what
the technology can achieve when pushed to its
limits. To maximise the range, we selected
the most suitable route and, of course, adapted
our driving style accordingly,” says Jakub Krs,
one of the drivers on the record-breaking
journey and responsible for high-voltage
battery strategy at Škoda Auto. “In everyday
use, customers are unlikely to drive the car
this way. Instead, they will take advantage of
everything the Peaq has to oer in terms of
driving dynamics, onboard infotainment and
comfort,” adds fellow driver Marek Jež (on
the left), Head of the Peaq model series. The
Škoda Peaq 90 has a homologated WLTP
range of up to 647 km. The seven-seater
Peaq’s record range of 936 km exceeded this
gure by 289 km, or almost 45%.
