Kubík goes to school; he wants
to be among other children, and
be as much a part of the world
around him as possible. But
because of his health condition,
he needs a special wheelchair.
He has one. However, children
grow quickly, and his current
wheelchair no longer ts him.
A new special wheelchair
would help Kubík be more
independent, function more
comfortably at school and
in everyday life. That is why
the public fundraiser
„Kubíkův vozík do světa
(“Kubík’s Wheelchair to the
World”) was launched. Every
contribution – no matter how
small – can help. You can do
that here.
From your hands to the road: How car steering works
Let’s Help

Rally de Portugal is usually characterised by soft gravel, deep ruts,
the occasional rock on the racing line and bright sunshine. This
time, however, the competitors faced an additional challenge:
Monsoon-like rain turned some of the stages of the sixth round of
the FIA World Rally Championship into mud baths. As expected,
the dicult road conditions inuenced the competition in WRC.
Despite an early puncture,  and  WRC Champion
Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Jørn Listerud from Norway
(Škoda Fabia RS Rally of team Toksport WRT) nished third in
WRC. However, other drivers in Škoda cars also held on to top
positions – you can read more about them on Škoda Motorsport.

The widespread adoption of steering
wheels came at the end of the 
th
century.
In the rst half of the 
th
century, two
systems in particular dominated – worm
steering and rack-and-pinion steering.
Turning demanded signicant eort from
drivers, especially at low speeds when
the steering wheel was heavy to operate,
making vehicle control far from eortless.
Perhaps you know the old joke that after
parking a classic car, there is no need to go
to the gym anymore. So how did we arrive
at a point where a steering wheel can now
be turned with one nger and cars can
park themselves? You’ll nd the answer
on Škoda Storyboard (it’s worth a look!)
or in the infographic.
To navigate a corner, the driver turns the steering wheel in the required direction, which correspondingly turns the front wheels. Every child understands
this simple principle. But what exactly happens between the steering wheel and the wheels, and in what ways can steering be further improved?
